FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept insurance?
Yes. We participate in numerous insurance programs, including BlueCross® BlueShield®, MetLife®, Aetna®, Guardian®, and United Concordia®.

How long will my procedure last, and will it hurt?
It depends on the procedure, but we are dedicated to providing a pain-free environment and use the latest techniques in anesthesia.

How do I get over my fear of the dentist?
If you’re uneasy about going to the dentist, you’re not alone. Tens of millions of Americans steer clear of the dental chair—sometimes for years—because of anxiety or fear. Whatever your reason, remember that our friendly, sympathetic staff understands your needs and strives to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Give us a call at 412-364-7188 so we can address your fears head-on.

Should I have my silver fillings replaced with white ones?
It’s up to you. Silver amalgam fillings are made of two nearly equal parts of mercury and a mixture other metals, such as silver, tin, copper, and zinc. So far, no scientific study has demonstrated that having dental amalgams is harmful or that removing your amalgam fillings will improve your health. However, sometimes we recommend replacing them due to leakage, breakdown, or recurrent decay. And some people like to replace them with “white” fillings (resin composite fillings) strictly for cosmetic reasons.

What are the best methods or products for whitening teeth?
As you know, there are many methods for whitening teeth. While some work better than others, not all types of discoloration can be corrected. Although we offer some excellent whitening techniques, including Zoom! Professional Whitening System, your best bet would be to speak with us directly so we can more accurately assess your individual needs.

Is a powered toothbrush better than a manual?
Both manual and powered toothbrushes can effectively and thoroughly clean your teeth. Children may find that brushing with a powered toothbrush is fun. Persons who have difficulty using a manual toothbrush may find a powered toothbrush easier to use or more comfortable. Whether you decide on manual or powered, choose a toothbrush that you like and find easy to use so that you’ll use it twice a day to thoroughly clean all the surfaces of your teeth. And don’t forget to replace your brush at least every three or four months. (See the American Dental Association’s tips on Oral Hygiene.)

How safe are dental X-rays?
Taking X-rays helps dentists to detect many diseases of the teeth and surrounding tissues that we might not otherwise see during a visual inspection of the mouth. Some of these problems include small areas of decay, infections in the bone, periodontal (gum) disease, abscesses or cycts, developmental abnormalities, and some types of tumors. Finding and treating dental problems at an early stage can save time, money, unnecessary discomfort, and even save your life. For these reasons, dentists consider X-rays to be one of their best diagnostic tools in helping patients maintain good oral health. Although you are exposed to trace amounts of radiation during an X-ray, the benefits likely outweigh the possible risks. (See the American Dental Association’s page on X-rays.)
