GIRL PSYCHIC GUILTY OF FURTUNE TELLING
Mother Also Convicted and Both Are Paroled in Custody of Counsel Until Thursday.
HOUDINI APPEARS IN COURT
Lawyer Plans Appeal—Penalty is Fine of $250, or a Sentence of Six Months.
Miss Eugenia Dennis, psychic from Kansas, and her mother, Mrs. Mary Dennis, were found guilty of fortune-telling yesterday by Magistrate Moses R. Ryttenberg in Washington Heights Court and paroled in the custody of their counsel, Frederick Goldsmith, until Thursday. Mr. Goldsmith asked delay for time to prepare motions.
The complaint against the psychic was made by Mrs. Mary W. Foley of 84 Newton Avenue, Astoria. Mrs. Foley charged that Miss Dennis and a son of Mrs. Foley was in Los Angeles and that a fee of $25 was demanded and paid. The son, returning shortly afterward, reported that he had been in Pittsburgh. Miss Dennis denied demanding a fee and said that she never made positive statements.
When the case was first called an attorney who had appeared at previous hearings was absent. This caused a postponement. Mr. Goldsmith appeared as counsel when the case was recalled, the attorney who had first appeared, arriving and explaining that he had been detained in another suit. Hereward Carrington, who had been sponsoring the girls experiments, and Harry Houdini, actor and student of the psychic, were with the Dennises when they appeared in court.
The penalty under Section 899 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, under which the conviction was had, is a fine of $250 or six months.
