The University of California, San Francisco, is the smallest of the 10 UC campuses. But its relative size belies its distinction as one of the leading biomedical research and health science education centers in the world. Dedicated to saving lives and improving health, UCSF handles more than one million patient visits per year and is San Francisco’s second largest employer.
THE NEED
To help design dual concentric conductor (DCC) antennas accurately and quickly
THE SOLUTION
HFSS, Ansoft Designer
In cancer treatment, hyperthermia significantly increases the effects of radiation and chemotherapy. DCC antennas are convenient radiators for microwave power deposition in superficial heating applications (1-2 cm recurrent breast cancer) due to simplicity of construction from a flexible PCB. In addition, spiral antennas collect the microwave portion of black body radiations for noninvasive thermometry.
"Ansoft provides powerful new tools to design such antennas,” said Paolo Maccarini, [title] at UCSF’s Radiation Oncology Department. “Reduced simulation time, increased accuracy and a user-friendly interface with the ability to sweep design parameters to achieve critical optimization goals, helped us to comprehensively study the radiation and matching properties of these two antennas.”
