THE NEED
To design a multi-pitch, multi-band helical antenna in the 700-800 MHz band and to broaden bandwidth quickly and accurately

THE SOLUTION
HFSS™, Optimetrics™

SooLiam Ooi, of Motorola’s Florida Corporate Research Labs, modeled a helical antenna with multiple pitches used on portable radios. Ooi divided the multi-pitch helix into multiple sections of short helixes and assigned each section variables for the number of turns, pitch, and angle of rotations. Using this information, he calculated coordinates.

According to Ooi, “With this model, the multi-pitch helical antenna could be tuned by simply editing the variable in the ‘edit all parameter’ menu in the macro editor. Having such a model created with macro language enabled the use of Optimetrics ™, either to do a parametric sweep or optimization.”
