Microwave Development Labs (MDL) is the largest independent producer of waveguide and subassemblies in the microwave industry. MDL’s product lines include waveguide bends and twists, directional couplers and monopulse comparators, rotary joints, microwave filters, rotary switches and waveguide shutters, waveguide pressure windows, and other components.
THE NEED
To design a three-dimensional, eight-port monopulse comparator as accurately and as quickly as possible
THE SOLUTION
HFSS, Optimetrics
Tom McWalters, CAD Manager at MDL, assembles monopulse comparators using several key components, such as E- and H-plane folded tees. McWalters uses HFSS and Optimetrics to design and optimize each component, then analyzes the fully assembled comparator using HFSS and compares it to measured data from a manufactured unit. Since the assembly is genuinely 3D and not simply quasi 2D, it provides a stringent test for the software.
“Design time of waveguide component assemblies (comparators) have evolved from taking weeks of design time to only days,” writes McWalters.
“We are developing the best waveguides and subassemblies in the microwave industry,” said MDL’s Tom LaCoture. “HFSS provides us with the most accurate answers, and Ansoft provides us with incomparable support."
