This tutorial will review multiple numerical techniques that are used to solve Maxwell’s equations, and show how these techniques are applied in a real design flow. A key goal of this talk is to give participants a basic understanding of the assumptions behind the methods so that they are best able to determine which techniques are suited to their design challenges. The talk will review the formulation of several approaches used to numerically solve Maxwell’s equations. Simple examples will be shown to illustrate the types of problems best suited to each of the techniques, and all of the examples will be taken from everyday design challenges faced by packaging, layout, and IC design engineers.
