Tom Interval

Beyond the sports scene
Pittsburgh’s Child
By Dee Giffin Flaherty
February 2, 1995

Eleven-year-old Michael held an aluminum foil ball in his hand. He took off his glasses, scratched his head, shook his hand gently and zap! The ball disappeared. His satisfied grin quickly gave way to the concentration of finding that darn ball. He feigned confusion and looked distracted, and then deftly removed the foil ball from beneath a cup on the table. Jennifer, Erica and Justin applauded in genuine approval and Michael’s pleasure was no longer concealed.

And so it goes during the magic lessons of Tom Interval of Ingomar. Tom teaches what is called “close-up magic,” tricks that can fool even the closest observer. And close-up magic it is. Taking his turn to perform, nine-year-old Justin was transformed from the youngest of the group, to a powerful magician. Verbal banter, stage presence, quick hands and social poise are the skills of this transformation. Kids in Tom’s magic classes not only learn tricks, they have the experience of relating to an adult who genuinely enjoys teaching kids to love what he loves. It’s all a part of the magic.

Parents devote a great deal of energy to looking for opportunities where their children can grow and build confidence. We have long been aware that sports can be important in the growth and development of kids. We have looked to sports activities as a way of giving children a chance to learn important skills and to experience the delight of physical play. But Pittsburgh offers all kinds of magical activities that are important to consider in helping children decide what interests suit them best. The possibilities are endless.
